Hi all,

For the last few months I've adding threads about my shot tranny. I finally decided to take it apart (I had nothing to loose right?) and I found this. LOTS of damage. Metal shavings everywhere and some stuck valves in the valve body.

I guess I will have a lot to do this summer. :(

Geeze.... I am not sure I'd even want to use that as a rebuildable core. I mean if you truly have metal shards and pieces all through the transmission, I *MIGHT consider the case reuseable - maybe - but think you may be better off buying a junkyard tranny to rebuild, with the proviso that it isn't a fragged tranny like yours is.

That's what I was thinking. If I get to buy another tranny, do you think it would be a big deal to install a more resistant automatic transmision on her? don't know much about them, but I would think the tranny used on a F250 or F350 would work nice. Just a thought.

If you `are wanting to install a different tranny you will have to do some modifications i believe the f250 has the 4r70w ( not sure) but you will have to find an adapter and do some modifications i would suggest you button up your old one and rebuild the one you get from a wrecking yard.(probably more cost effective) or if you want you could buy glaciers 4r70w

Ah if it were JUST that easy. Np, swapping trans is a tough job, and ona scale of 1 - 10 for auto technical ability to pull off, it is way up there. So, the quick and short answer is no. You got an A4LD. Without a swap the best you can do is to rebuild it as a Frankentranny, using 5R55 parts.

I will send you all the 5R55E hard parts you need for less than $150.

Glacier,

Other than metal shavings, I was impressed with the parts that didn't get damaged. They look really good other than on the racing bushings, whish is normal, I think. I think I will do a better inspection on the valve body to see how it looks.

I am seriosly thinking about upgrading it with 5R55 parts. They look MUCH stronger than the A4LD's race parts.

Another thing I could do is do thermal treatmento on these parts. Has anyone done that?

je5,

What includes on your list?

Anything you want. Let me know.

Cryogenic treating in this tranny would be overkill. (I am finishing up a really STRONG 4R70W... and didn't cryo anything....leave that to the folks who break parts and run nitro with superchargers.)

If you decide to build a frankentranny about the only old A4LD part you might reuse is the planetary, and I'd recommend one with a tig welded race. I'd replace the rear case race too. In short ..take ALL the 5R guts... you will need them. $150 is a fair price for them if they are in good shape coming from a running tranny.

Soon as I finish up the 4r70W I will have 2 frankentrannies on the stands to build. Not planning a diary though, that slows me down too much., plus we already got a good one.

All of the insides of an 5R55E for $150 plus shipping. I suppose you will need the valve body also and six tested solinoids? I have an UPS account but you choose your shipping preference. Hope this helps.

Glacier, cough umm could i send you my tranny and you build it into a franken tranny for me? cough cough ;)

A) a frankentranny uses the A4LD case and A4LD VB.... the wormtracks in the 5R AND the electronics are different than the A4LD so the 5R VB is not used... B) I do build frankentrannies... Pm me for details.

Je5,

I suppose these are used parts. Are they in a good shape? You are saying I will need the six solenoids, but the A4LD only has 2. How would my transmission computer control the other 4???

Used in good shape. Your valve body would be used with it's two solenoids so your computer knows the same. I guarantee the hard parts. I have two hundred positive ratings on eBay. Will you be following "Glacier's" frankentranny guide and rebuilding it yourself? Thanks

Yes, the entire idea and follow through was solely a product of Brain's mind. He conceived the idea and did all the research.

As for the solenoid Q.... you do not use the 5R valve body with its solenoids, you use the 2 solenoid A4LD version.

It was a great work on Brain's part. Great work!!!

I am assuming the difference in the A4LD VB is that it controls de hydrolic mechanicaly while the 5R does it digitally. Is that right?

More or less correct.
