ATF in a manual?

My '96 Sport is a 5-speed (Mazda R1) thank god beacause I have read the threads with all the auto tranny problems. I read somewhere that it takes MERCON ATF even though it is a stick? Just checking to see if this is true. It has never had it changed, and even though the miles are low for a '96
(76,000) I think I want to do a change.

Yes, ATF in the manual trans is correct. You can check your owner's manual for confirmation.

Use Amsoil's full synthetic ATF. I switched a month ago and am really happy with the results. The shifting is much smoother. Make sure whatever you do end up using, that it is a full synthetic, as the regular kinds burn up really quickly. Good luck, and make sure to get a bottle pump.

I would agree that syn is best, but as far as regular burning up quick, what do you base this on? My 93 calls for regular Mercon, and says first fluid change at 100,000 miles.

GM Syncromesh fluid works well to. IT is recomended from the Tremec factory for aftermarket 5&6 speeds.

I don't know if I can get that over here, I have never seen that brand. I will definitely check for it though. Our selection of oils and fluids over here is pretty limited unless you go on the economy, but then it can cost as much as $10.00 or more for one quart of oil or tranny fluid!

Just seems that way in any transmission i have ever seen. May depend on the way you drive too,what rpm you shift at, etc.
