I am going to install an Alpine 7998 deck into my 98 X. On my X I have controls on the steering wheel and also on the rear of the console. Can these still be utilized? I mean could I still use the volume/channel change buttons to control the Alpine? Is there a special wiring harness to get to make the adjustment?

Thanks,

im pretty sure you need the stock ford radio, but im not sure if you can still get a harness to get it working, but i doubt it.

I know crutchfield has some thing that you can buy to get the volume controls in the back to work with aftermarket headunits but im not sure if it also works with the steering wheel controls.

Try cutchfield.com

Yall are the greatest. Thanks everyone. Ordered the thing I needed from Dead Link Removed
It will be great to have an aftermarket radio and it still work like the factory one.

Merry Christmas everyone!!!!

sweet. so i was wondering, i was planning on buying the steering wheel with the radio controls on it, and putting it on my stock 98X, i originally just wanted it because i liked the look of it, so now if i get this: Dead Link Removed it will let me use my stock ford head unit with the steering wheel controls?

snair u will have to run all the wires through the colum for the controls since i dont think they will be there in ur rig

thats sweet...anyone found something that will allow me to use my rear controls?

Yup. I've though of about putting an 98 steering wheel on my 97 to get the controls but its going to cost way too much.

How much does this cost and what's the process?

I install at best buy. This is the interface that we sell. It taps into the controller wire behind the head unit. If the controller is a single wire(all the fords I have seen have been), this thing will work like a charm. Its cool to have working buttons and it is compatible with just about any head unit with a remote. The best thing about it is that all of the factory buttons are programmable. You can make the buttons in your car control any function thats available on the deck's remote control. cool stuff.

Mine only has cruise control buttons on the steering wheel and I have a '98

If any one is interested, I do have an extra steering wheel with the controls in them. I bought it for use while mine was being done. Also I cannot contest for any other after market contols except for the ones I have. They work perfect. Volume up and down, radio stations to next programmed channel, mode controls from am/fm to xm to cd changer etc. Mine works flawlessly and couldn't be happier.

I don't know if you know, but is the harness behind the steering whel for the controls on all models? I do belieive that they are for the 3rd gens, but no 100% sure about 2nd gens. Thanks!

I'd like to know too...I have a 97 XLT...I'll buy yours BBQ (for the right price) if the harness is there.

PM'd you. Lemme know. Thx!

From what I was told by a Ford Tech, all the wiring is the same behind the steering wheel on the 2nd gens so yes, it would work.

You might also need the clock spring that goes behind the steering wheel. thats what basically allows all the controls to work and the wheel to still turn. I'm pretty sure this part is seperate from the steering column and you wouldnt need the entire column.
