98 EXPLORER SPORT
Hi, I Have a 1998 explorer sport. I was noticing that my auto 4WDR was going on more than usual. I have done the brown wire mod so I was taking note of when the light came on. After using the car at the beach I drove home and saw the the light was on for the Auto 4WDR. I slowed down and thurned the wheel and it was indeed on in 4 wheel drive. It stays on even when going at high speeds. When I come to a stop the auto 4 wheel drive will disengage.

What Is the problem. Please Help!!
Hall Sensors? Is ther a way to check to see if they are functioning proper;y?

Thank you

please help.

It even goes into 4 wheel drive when parked. I can tell because i connected a switch with a light on it to bypass the brown wire for the 4 wheel drive. When the 4wdr is engaged the light goes on. The light is going on and off when parked.

hi i actully have the same problem with an explorer i just bought. whats up with the brown wire?

Don't know how I missed this thread last week...

The light going out when stopped is normal. It reduces the power sent to the transfer case clutch coil to a minimum duty cycle when the vehicle is stopped. It's just the way the system works.

The light staying lit when driving in 4auto, however, is NOT normal. As for what's causing it? My best guess is that there is water someplace it shouldn't be. There is likely a speed sensor that has (falsely) told the system that the front and rear shaft speeds are not the same. For a 98, that would be either the front output shaft speed sensor on the t-case, or the rear axle speed sensor on the rear diff. My money would be on the rear axle speed sensor. We're seeing those fail more and more as they hit the 10-year mark.
