So let me set the scenario lets say the right side of the truck is on ice left side on dry pavement when i step on the gas and the rear slip it clunks into 4wd which can be felt. Lately it seems like the auto 4wd is engaging late maybe its just in my head but around a corner today in sand the rear still slipped a few times??? Ok but back the the ice scenario sometimes it seems like it will engage and until it gains traction there is a consistant jerking the truck does until it hits pavement Why is the auto4wd doing this My friend told me his X did this then he replaced the T-case fluid and now you cant even tell his engages.\

Help please

The system is functioning normally. It's basically 'rear wheel drive until it slips', then it momentarily engages the 4wd. When it sees the front and rear speeds are the same, it releases the transfer case clutch. If you're still on the power and the rears begin to slip again, it'll engage again, then disengage and check the system again. It'll continuously cycle the system like that until the wheel speeds are the same. It's just the way the system works.

Here's a question- what if the truck is not under acceleration? If you are driving downhill and you slip, what does it do?
