hey, I recently had my 92 in for a tune up, and I was told by the mechanic that my drivers side auto hub is shot, and that I need to replace it. I'd like to go with the manual hubs, but I dont have the cash to throw out right now. Soooo, I lifted the back of the truck, and the front drivers side, and just left the passenger side front tire on the ground, and put the truck in 4X4. When I did this, the front drivers side tire was turning just like it should. BUT, when i shut the truck off and got out, I spun the drivers side front tire with my hand, and it makes this "click, click, click" noise. Does this mean that the auto hub is shot?
thanks,
andy

Auto hubs are a common problem on first gen ex's:(

I had the same troubles with my auto hubs. Last winter I said "screw it" and had manual hubs put on. It was so nice to actually have 4x4 for once! When i would engage 4x4 and push the gas the front wheels would click like hell, not any more!

When I engage 4 wheel drive, it doesnt click at all. It just clicks when you rotate the tire with your hand when the truck is lifted up. I know that the tire moves when the truck is lifted up, but maybe it wont work when its got alot of pressure on it. Maybe its striped enough that it cant handle the pressure, but works fine when there is no pressure applied to it.

Getting manual hubs is a lot cheaper than replacing the auto ones. I got the manual hubs and conversion kit for just under $200. Just do a search for 4x4 wholesalers.
