I am wanting to lock my rear end. I was planning to use one of the Auto locker types like the powertrax or the EZ locker. A friend has been trying to talk me into a mini spool instead.

With the auto lockers...I could install myself I believe and they wouldn't lock when not under power. But they cost a good bit.

The mini spool is locked all the time. Is stronger and cheaper. But would have to be done at a shop i think.

Is all of that right? Whats everyones opinions on the two and how do the on/ off road manners of the two differ?

If you're planning on driving on pavement at all, or go offroading on rock often, a spool is not for you. A spool fully prevents the wheels from turning at different speeds, making turning difficult and putting a lot of stress on other components. IMO spools are only for drag strip only vehicles or dedicated wheeling trailer queens (and even then not the best for rock crawlers).

spools will brake things way more often then a locker.... they are initially cheaper, but worse in the long run when breakeage occurs.....

alright...thanks for the reply. I was pretty much leaning that way already, but its good to get it confirmed from others.
