Auto trans in a 91 2xd X

I have a problem.
My explorer has been sitting for a while. I had a buddy take it up to the gas station to put some gas in it. I was following in another car. Well, he was going down the street, and the throttle stuck wide open! He panicked, instead of switching the ignition off, he thew it into reverse! WTF!! Now I only have 2nd gear in forwards, and I still have reverse.

Couple of questions...
What type of tranny do I have in a 91 Explorer Xlt 2wd 4.0L w/ O.D.?
And Am I F-D? Do I need a whole new tranny? Or can I replace a few internal parts?
If parts can be replaced... what do I need?

You have an A4LD. There is a part in the rear called the low/reverse servo. This controls the rear band for the low, and reverse functions. There is a part in that area called the rear one way sprag. This rear section is a high wear area in these transmissions. That sprag could easily get destroyed from neutral drops. This is when you rev the engine in neutral, then throw it in gear. The rear band is stronger than the other 2 bands, but could break if abused. Drop the pan, and inspect the fluid for any metal shavings, or other parts. The next step would be to remove the cover for the low/reverse servo inside of the pan. It has 4 bolts. Check the rear band by putting pressure against it with an awl, or skinny screwdriver. If there is no spring action, then it might have snapped.

Hey brooklyn he said he still has reverse just only 2nd in the foward gears wondering if he stripped the direct drum or the input shaft?

It did drive for a short moment... Then after the vehicle stopped, heartd a clunk, and that was it.

I will drop the pan tommorrow after work. You suspect a broken band then?
If that is the case, I should just locate another tranny... no?

You could rebuild the transmission yourself instead of buying a rebuilt. Follow the instructions in Glacier's diaries, and the step by step procedure in the ATSG manual. I would recommend using the single wrap band, and new apply struts instead of the double wrap band. Before assuming that the band is broken, try to adjust it with an In. Lb. torque wrench. The procedure is in the sticky thread that I wrote in the transmission section. Glacier wrote the part about adjusting the bands with the picture tutorial. The middle band is for 2nd gear. If that broke, you wouldn't have 2nd gear. The front band is for overdrive, and the rear band is for low/reverse.
