Hi All,
I have a 91 XLT with 180k on it. While towing a 2,000 lb. trailer in 102°F temp up a steep grade, the tranny started spewing oil out the bell housing area and burning on the exhaust. We stopped and let it cool overnight in a campground, checked the level and drove around for the last week with just a few drops dripping off the trans. I learned there is a seal between the torque converter and the front pump? that could be leaking. Is this a serious problem or should I just watch the fluid level closely. I need to get educated about auto transmissions.

Thanks in advance,
Pat Dexter

That has happend to some of my families X's The seal blows, then as it cools down, partially re-seals. It isn't fixed however, so be careful.

It can be driven like that if you want to add fluid every one to two weeks though. If you need to get it fixed later due to money, whatever, it should be fine. I drove mine like that for a couple of months, but it only needed oil about once a month.

Thanks for the advice Cranckcase,
I will do as you recommend.

Pat
