Automatic Transmission Fluid - Mixing Brands

98 XLT, 4.0 SOHC, AWD, Auto - 191K

I have no record or recollection on last changing the transmission filter and adding or changing fluid. I have been convinced that flushes are a bad idea and just plan to drop the pan, change the filter and replace the 5 or 6 qt loss.

However, if this was last done at a quick change joint, I am concerned that some fluids may be incompatible with others. Is this a risk?

I plan on using Mercon V as specified.

Synthetic and conventional don't mix to well (regardless of what quick lube monkeys tell you)
Without knowing what's in it now, It's a chance you'll have to take sometime. You should be ok though.
