Average cost to rebuild 5r55e??

What type of stuff is that Lubeguard anyway? Does it thicken the viscosity to make the Mercon III act like the Mercon V? The reason I was curious about the direction of the lip seals is because they have a specific direction on the other pistons inside of the transmission. They face the opposite way of the spring area.

Chris,
I picked up a bottle of Lubegard Green today at CarQuest. I am going to add it to the transmission in the morning. Thanks for that suggestion. I think the Mercon III in there is a "no,no." Am I correct to assume that Mercon V can be used in trannies that call for III but that III should not be used in one that calls for V? It is only 10 oz so I don't think it will overfill. It still baffles me that he would use III in it. I got my ATSG book today and it clearly states along with the Owners Manual to use V.

Thanks,
Rob

Here is a link to Glacier's artice on the subject: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146841 The answer is "NO". Only use the correct fluid that was specified, or it will lead to problems. Different fluids have a different viscosity rating, just like engine oils. Thicker oils will make it work harder, unless it were designed to work on that type of fluid.

Well, I went ahead and threw the additive in there. The transmission calls for Mercon V and I find it hard to believe a soft rebuild with a new TC and a couple of bands and a planetary gear could allow it to switch to III. Additive is in and my mind is now at ease. Thanks for the link to the thread, I had read that a week ago, don't know why I did not remember it.

Chris, thanks for the offer on the modifier from Ford. I called Carquest and they had it in stock and they are a block away from my office. $11 for the bottle but that is pretty cheap for the peace of mind of knowing the correct fluid is in there.

It is not a viscosity issue.

The issue relates the the fricition properties of the fluid at the steel/friction interface. Merc V has more friction modifiers than Mercon. In a modulated clutch setup, precise friction slippage properties are essential to proper operation and in eliminating shudder.

I have researched the issue, and I can barely understand the technical explanations, let alone try explain them to someone else... Best way to TRY to explain it is that at the point where the friction material and steel start coming to lockup... strange things begin happen at the molecular level in the interface ATF film layer, is my best answer. (and I am sticking to it)

But it's not a viscosity modifier. Way different thing.

The 5R55E modulates the tcc lockup and programs slippage for feel.
