Average life span of a V8 AWD

I just bought a 2000 XLT w/ 30,000 miles on it. How many miles can I expect to get out of it without any major repairs?

i would say 100k more with regular maintence sounds like you found a good deal

I brought a 2000 AWD V8 with 26k (I've got 35k now). Here's what I've replaced / maintained so far:

Pads / rotors (front and rear)
Rear wiper arm motor
IAC
Transmission cooler hose / connector to radiator
Tranny Flush and filter change from AAMCO (this helped the shifting and gas mileage)
Alternator belt and tensioner
Shocks (front and rear)
Recharged A/C
Flushed antifreeze and changed thermostat
Changed fuel filter (this may not have been necessary, but I think it helped)

I'm also thinking of changing the PCV valve and perhaps the plugs and wires. All in all it's a good truck, but a lot of parts wore down before they should have (specifically the shocks and brakes - my rear rotors had 1/4" grooves in them!). The major problem I have is the gas mileage. I was getting 10 MPG no matter what I tried. After the tranny flush I was able to get 13 but I have to run a few more tanks to confirm that. The V8 & tranny are a strong combo from what people on the board say - that's why I bought it.

If you have any other questions let me know. I had the front windows tinted by a shop and installed a radio and Bulldog remote start myself so I'm getting to know the truck pretty well.

The brake parts I would agree, but for shocks to wear down in 26k is crazy to me!

Oh, and I agree with Billy117 - we should easily be able to get 100k out of these trucks (knock, knock ).

that is actually about the average lifespan of shocks 30k most people just don't notice since the decline in performance is gradual they are cheap to replace anyway

That's true - but they had nothing left on them. I could compress them with ease.

did u replace the shocks with stock ones or aftermarket ? and how much did they run you i got 100,000 on my explorer and def need to change my shocks..its been evident for a long time i have just been lazy

i have 97k on my truck. I have modified everything on it and the only problem I have had was the transmission. It happened around 94k. Then again I am using nitrous and have made numerous engine modificaions. The transmissions just cost me the fluid and filter. All that happened was junk got caught in tyhe valve body. I also have my stock shocks at 97k still and im lowered. So dont think everyone is bad its just how you treat them

has anyone but me actually ruined a 5.0 without stupid modifications or going over 200k?

i mean they pretty much last forever. I have 160k on my tranny and still going great (was mildly rebuilt though just for more performance 65k ago)

ANY car you buy in this day and age should last 100,000 miles without major problems. If it doesn't, you either got a really poorly built car or you don't take care of it. I'm expecting to get at least 150,000 out of my Ex, easy. 200 if I decided to put a little money into it.

pffft....I got 120,000 on mine and I'll easily have 150,000 by the end of next year and probably more and by the year after that 180,000 or so and probably more. If I don't get at least 200,000 out of it normal highway driving, I would be severly dissapointed.....

My dad has 186K on his 99 and no problems. My bro has 135 with no problems and he drives like a bat out of hell. I have the SOHC and haven't had any problems but I still would love that throaty V8 rumble! Those V8s are incredible engines, time and tested true.

I used Gabriel VSTs (now called Ultras). It was $100 for the set and they had a $25 rebate at the time. I'm happy with the performance of them but a lot of people say the Ranchero 9000s are the best. For the money, the VSTs were great. I no longer fear potholes like I used to.
