My mom has been having trouble with hers, it's an 03 eddie, with the sohc v6, and all wheel drive she's only getting 11mpg and she drives it like a grandma, any thoughts on if that's normal? They took it in to the dealer and they checked it out and said that when they test drove it it was getting 15 in town, and 18 on the highway, basically giving my parents the run around. Any thoughts would be appreciated.Thanks.

This is weird! Why such huge differences ? v6, v8 none are really the same. I had at one time thought of trading for a v6 to try and get 23-25 mpg but now no way. I feel lucky where I am with the v8 and 18-20 mostly.

I have a 2002xls 4.0 4x4 just over 56kmiles. Stock tire size. I just drove to and came back from Florida. I was able to get just about 18mpg highway. That includes a some 15 minute idle times to get gas and stretch out and a couple of hour nap stops. But to the most part at 70-80mph with AC running on max most of the time if not at normal and fan set to 2. I had my wife and 2 year old in the truck with lots of crap for the trip. I checked each fillup with miles completed and all was around 18mpg if not a little more. On the way back was the same and this time I had a small washing maching that added at least 80lbs to load. I did 2 full to empty runs without stop and still got same mileage, so i dont think any of my stops did much in affecting result.Wish I could get more out of this truck.. Last note I am running mobil1 synthetic 5/30. Prior to going synthetic I ran some new cheapo 5/30 and new filter for 2 days then did my oil change to synthetic with new filter. got my reciepts..maybe I will tally them up to get more accurate number.

Explorer Lee, "It is dead stock except Mobil 1"

How is Mobil 1 working for you? What are you oil change intervals? I think I will switch to this.

Edit.

I edited the title to include all 3rd gen 4.0's. Since i figure they're relatively the same components, if not exact.

I have a 99 4x4 and I get about 2mpg city and 4 highway......actually its more like 10 and 15 or something like that but 2 and 4 is what it seems like.

I'm quite happy with it, I put Mobil 1 in all my cars that will hold it inside and not burn or leak (the 225,000 mile Honda makes it disappear). I just change the oil when the Explorer OBC says that it is time. I'm guessing that means about every 5,000 miles or so. I don't know if the OBC oil change suggestion is mileage based or if it actually has some way of measuring and evaluating the oil condition. Anyone really know?

Mobil 1 costs more but I buy in on sale at Walmart in 5 qt. jugs. If it saves even one mpg over 5,000 miles then it has more than double paid the increased cost of the oil itself.

Mines a 2002 xlt 2wd, and the sticker that came on the vehicle quoted an average between 13-19 city, and 18-24 highway. Just wondering if these numbers have proven accurate to those with similar trims (if the trim type even matters). I have new 255/70/16 tires on, and to my understanding the stock size is 235/70/16? That made the current ones taller right?

I havent done a "fill up tank, drive to empty, refill, calculate, etc" analysis on my fuel consumption yet, but according to the message center i'm getting 15-18 in the city and 23-28 on the highway. I have a 4x4 xlt.

You do not have to go to empty to calculate mileage.

I have figured out that the check guage light comes on with approx. 2.5 gallons left in the tank.

So therefor all you need to do is refill somwhere close to empty, fill 'er back up, and see how many gallons went back in...then (hoping you checked the odometer before and after) divide the "trip"' miles by how many gallons went back in.

i know, silly. of course, the more you drive down the tank (to 1/4 left as opposed to 3/4 left) the more accurate you're probably going to be. only reason i haven't done it is because i generally cant afford to fill my tank ha!

I would love to get 23 to 28 miles per gallon on the highway...
although i have everything to do a major tune up on my 2002 and just waiting till I get into my new garage...

Our 04 XLT 4x4 was getting around 16mpg in a mix of city and highway. We put a "platinum injection fuel saver" in the intake and we are now getting 19+. Platinum injection works on the same principal as the catalytic converter. Platinum is used in the emissions system to burn up the extra fuel particles before they hit the atmosphere. By placing platinum in the intake, the fuel is burned more efficiently and MPG goes up.

Also, does anyone know of a gear swap that can be used on an 04 XLT 4x4. I was thinking about raising the gear ratio to get better mileage. If there is a swap, do I just put it in the rear diff? Just wondering because of the 4x4 aspect.

Thanks in advance

255/70/16 diameter = 30.06in | 235/70/16 = 28.95in
1.11 taller
so it would be like a slightly taller gear. Not much. But, you are turning more weight and rolling resistance. What you might gain in gear ratio, you could lose in rolling resistance

Increases in gear can gain you gas mileage depending on cruise RPM, but increases in rolling resistance will lose you mileage.

What I've noticed on my Fords is that they are over geared, possibly to help with emissions.

Hope this helps.

Not bad. I get crappy city driving. Worst I have seen was like 11mpg in Queens. Most is 18 on pure highway non stop driving. I am still stock too. I will be getting my K & N filter shortly and I hope that changes it a little for the better.

St. Louis to Chicago, averaging 65 MPH.

Average- 20 MPG.

Did a 900 mile trip this past week with the '02 4.6. With a luggage carrier on top(soft bag) doing 75-80 with my right foot on the skinny peddle the ScanGauge reported anywhere from 18-21mpg. I only get 15 with my 5.0 with nothing by two mirrors sticking out the sides!!!
