1997 Explorer Limited 5.0
Hello all! I am new to these forums, I have a 97 explorer limited 5.0 AWD. This weekend I had a field day working on the explorer including adjustable camber bolts (finally!). However, there is still one problem that remains un solved. It started making this noise about 3 months after I bought it. Its a creaking/clicking noise which sounds almost identical to a bad cv joint, but it's not. The cv boots are both fine and look fairly new and have barely any slop. This noise happens when moving forward or backward, in drive, neutral, and reverse. It goes away after I get to 10-15 mph. So I put it up on 4 jack stands and lightly held the brake (fighting the ABS lol) to keep the wheels spinning slow while I put my head underneath and listened. It sounded like it was coming from either the cv joint in the front driveshaft or the transfer case. So I bought the kit to rebuild the cv joint and while the front driveshaft was out, the sound was gone! I was sure I had found the problem. So I rebuild the cv at work the next day and put the shaft back in. Same noise as before!! It has been like this for close to a year now and hasn't gotten any worse. So Im wondering if it's the transfer case? And what inside of it would make this noise. Topped off diff, trans, and transfer case fluid this weekend too to make sure. Ive searched and searched but can't find a thread where anybody ever found the problem. Seems like all the threads I found were 97s just like mine too. Any help would be great, this is so annoying lol.

Thanks!!

Same issue I had with my 97, right down to the jackstand diagnosis. Ended up being the transfer case. (I also replaced the front driveshaft, and that wasn't it...)

Did you replace the u-joint when you replaced the cv?

No I didnt replace the u joints but when I took the shaft out I checked them both and they both seemed fine. No slop in them and they moved very smoothly. That was my next guess after the cv joint too. Looks like it may be time for a 4406 swap!
