AWD question?

I have AWD, does this mean that all 4 wheels are always turning or do the front spin only when needed? I know it is a dumb question but I am being told that all four wheels always turn.

there is awalys power being sent to all 4 wheels however there is a viscous coupling inbetween the front and rear differental
