1966 Ford Explorer Limite
Hi. First time on a forum but need some general information to get my explorer converted. I would like to switch the awd to a 4wd if possible and need to know what I need to collect. It is a 1996 Ford Explorer Limited Edition. I have read on a post in the past that it is possible to convert the explorers but was unsure of what I had to purchase to do away with the awd completely. I am a 4wd person like it better that way I can lock and go when I need to and get some better fuel mileage. I have the driveline in the front currently out the flange is bad so I figured since I know a few places to get some parts fairly cheap I could work on getting it converted just needed a list of parts to buy. Thank You

Have you tried doing a search on "AWD TO 4X4 conversion in the modified "96-01 explorer forum? It has been done and you will find "stickies" at the top of the page and lots of other informative/how to threads there...

AWD to 4WD

I did look in the links for a conversion. I only found for manual transfer cases but where my vehicle is a limited addition it has the computer console and heater tube in the floor for the rear heater. I can only use an electric shift on this vehicle. Would prefer a manual but that assembly in the floor stops that. Does the 4406 come out with an electronic switch for the 4x4 to engage. I would like to get this switched I really dislike the awd on fuel mileage and part locations.

IDK why you couldn't use an electric shift if you can make it work, but doesent (n correct me if Im wrong) the manual t-case shifter come thru the side of the center hump and not the middle? There for not disturbing your factory located electronics once the conversion is complete and the interior re-installed?

if you have a full length console, that will not matter. the shifter will not come out on top of the trans tunnel, but on the side. there are lots of people that have done this mod (myself included) with a full console, and message center. as for electric shift, there isnt enough room between the gas tank and transfer case.

K. Thanks for the information I would rather have a manual shift instead of electric. They are more reliable to fix. So according to my research I should get a 4406 manual shift transfer case the proper driveshafts and the linkage stuff and I should be good to go. Am I right? I have never attempted a project like this one and am really looking forward to doing it and having the fun of customizing my vehicle. Another question. Will I have to replace the front differential for the four wheel drive one? If possible I would like to leave it be if it won't affect anything but if I have to I will but not sure if I will have to or not.

you need to get a conversion u joint if you are using a f150, ect drive shaft. you will also be changing trans mounts more because of the added weight of a 4406, unless you make a mustang poly mount work, which has also been done.

AWD to 4WD

Ok. I was thinking though am I able to get parts from another explorer that is 4wd and convert it over or do I need to go with other parts. Like I said before I have never done this and all the assistance I can get is very helpful. Thanks

If you get parts from another explorer, you will be getting the same thing as you have now.

awd

No. My vehicle is a awd and the vehicle I want to get parts out of is a 4wd. Do I have to use a totally different vehicle's 4wd assembly or can I use an explorer around the same year as mine.
