I'm getting clunking noises from under my '97 5.0L explorer under acceleration. A mechanic friend of mine listened to it and told me that it must be the clutch pack in the transfer case worn out (or completely worn away). He's never worked on one before and we're trying to decide whether or not to sell the truck. Has anyone replaced these clutches before? Are there any special Ford tools necessary? By the time I'm done would I have been better off buying an $800 rebuilt T-case? I really appreciate any advice...
