Awesome idea for door speaker grills

if you have a junkyard next to your house I would suggest going there and getting 1 grill from a model the similar color inside as yours. Reason I say this is if you do it and you don't like it you didn't wreck the ones in your truck..

If you do it and you do like how it turns out, then you are already 25% of the way there.. Just a thought..

I just finished 1 grill. The front right one. It looks ok, I scratched the plexi in one spot near the bottom so that does not look to great, but other than that its not bad. This one is the second version: the first time I drilled small holes and realized that the sound was not coming through at all. It cracked when I tried to drill some bigger ones. This time I drilled more large holes. The volume is slightly restricted, but not much. Its only noticable when only that speaker is playing. It helps the bass from the speaker a bit though. I am trying to get my digital camera to work. I will hopefully have some pics later.

I think they look pretty cool. :afro: Defiantly different. I just built a custom amp housing where I used plexiglass to cover it up. I'll have pics up soon enough.

it looks pretty good...maybe do paint or some how cover up where it isnt the speaker so you dont see all the other stuff in the door....

That's cool. I didn't think you would get any sound. Good work!

Wow looks pretty good!

I'd get some kind of blue vinyl to cover everything in the plexi but the speaker. I thought it was going to look bad, but it looks surprisingly well.

I am thinking about getting some black fabric or vinyl to cover that part up. Does anyone have any idea how to wire an led or two back there to light the speaker up? Cause that would like amazing.

Thanks

LEDs, breadboard, resistors, power and ground. Done. Look in Performance Lighting to see how huskyfan did his overhead lights with LEDs, explains it well.

Awesome. Yeah, tomorrow I am gonna do the plexi for the driverside door. Then I will be gone for a week or two and when I get back I will look into the led/vinyl bit.

Thanks for the feedback all.

Re:

Its got a nice different look to it. I dont like the area around the speaker/the look of that. Once you do something to fix that, Im sure it will be great.

Give your tweets some room to breathe! High frequency sound is highly directional, and you are probably losing a good bit of it!

Actually, I tested it, and it did not hurt sound quality hardly at all. If anything it took a bit of the buzzing out of the sound when the mp3 quality is low.

I'd have to seriously question your claim that they don't hardly affect the sound. You've got a cover that's only about 30% invisible. That means that 70% is having an effect on your sound quality. But if it doesn't bother you that's what's most important. I do think it looks good. Now you're gonna have to detail behind your door panel!

It could be impairing the super high notes (20k+ hz) or something, but I honestly can't tell a big difference. I think when I am doing the other door I am gonna make a point of cutting larger holes for in front of the two tweeters, but I doubt the mids are being hurt and I am positive that the bass is more defined this way. If the driver door highs are more defined than the right side (i will fade/balance the system out to single out the two speakers) then I will fiddle with the right side to do the same thing. I did this test with the original grille with the small holes and it seriously hurt sound. But to my ear the larger holes were a significant improvement.

I think I am gonna wait a bit to do the detailing. I am still going to fatmat my doors in like 3 weeks or so and I think I can just wait until then to do the matting/led's. I am betting that the turn on lead could power 6 or so led's, if not I guess I would need a new power source for them. But I will figure that out at that point.

Again thanks for the input.
