yes i know this topic has been covered several times, but its always been in reference to the code on the door, i was at a junkyard today and lookin for a replacement axle and i found one with d4 stamped on the axle (this explorer had no doors) does this meen that the axle is a 3.73 ls?

D4 does stand for 3.73 ls. Maybe the yard was smart and put the code on there when the doors got taken off?

Also, the diff should have a tag that has something like 88 3L73 on it.

i just remember seein the D4 on there, it was on the tag that comes from the factory, i had to clean the road grime off of it. they were kinda dumb there, they were tryin to tell me that all 2wd explorers 91-94 had the same ratios. hopefully then if it is a 3.73ls i can get it for cheaper than the ls. i know i have a 3.08 now, and the axle code is 43 on the door, but on the axle it says somethin like 9461 on it.

as far asi know the only way to tell for sure what it is is by the diff tag

i just went out and found the metal tag on one of the bolts, here i am tryin to decode this stuff!!!! :) . ill have to check it out on the one in the junkyard tommorrow, the tag i saw on it was a paper/plastic tag glued on the passenger side axle tube, and it said D4 on it. hopefully that means its a 3.73 ls. thanx for the help guys

It sounds like the wrecker put that tag on when they parted it out...it is probably a 3.73.....

i picked up the rearend today, its a 3.08 accordin to the little metal tag. oh well, i need it anyways, maybe later ill come across a good deal on a 3.73 ls or somethin along those lines.

Did they put those little marker lines all over it? If they did, and it is apparent that you didn't do anything to it, or take any parts off, they should refund your money for it.

Hey I'm gonna buy an axle from a guy, and had him read the codes over the phone:
top row- s622b
bottom row-3_27_88_2d28

What does this mean? Is it a 3.27? If so, the drive home from sandiego is gonna be a biiiotch!

yup. open 3.27
