Axle gearing question

According to the Standard Catalog of 4x4s, the 83-85 Rangers only came with 4 cyl and 3.45 gears. From 86-93 (the last year the book covers) 4.10 was an option, but it doesn't get specific enough to pair it with any particular engine. The same years (86-93) had three engines available. Some info for you, but no final answer. Also, the book only covers "American" 4x4s, so Mazda is not covered.

I'm curious, what are you planning?

Sorry to have to tell you this, but Rangers use 28 spline axles, Explorers use 31 spline axles. Also, the Explorer houseing is wider than the Ranger housing.

The good news is, there is a larger selection of traction aiding differentials for the 31 spline version of the 8.8.

A really tight limited slip or locker would help that 2wd Explorer go a long way (probably farther than most stock 4wd)
