OK. My 2000 Explorer EB (5.0 AWD) went in for an alignment. It has typical endplay that I haven't measured but seems under 1/4". The shop would not align it, stating the endplay will screw up the alignment.

1) What's the true max endplay on those rears?

2) What do I say to this tech regarding my alignment?

I really don't care to rebuild my rear diff just to get an alignment but I need one, as I just replaced the DS inner tie rod end.

Thanks :)

Not sure on the endplay measurement, but probably should try another shop. You'll know its truly a problem if a second shop tells you the same news.

Since you only disassembled one tierod and did not touch the opposite side, it's not very hard to get straight assuming your allignment was okay prior. Start by eyeballing the tierod you worked on to set the tire a little toe-out. Work in with 1/2 turns until the steering no longer pulls and wheel is straight, then try a 1/4 turn back out. If wheel stays straight and no pulling you are done. If brings back a slight imbalance, turn back in 1/4. This isn't an exact result obviously, but will get you close enough to drive until other conditions can be repaired and get proper alignment.
