AXLE SWAP

Hi there, I am getting an explorer sport, between 95 and 97. I want to swap the axles out and put a couple of dana 60's in. I also plan on running tires around 35- 38 inches tall. any insight on this would be great, I really want to lift her up and throw some dirt around. I am not into the rock crawling- it is far too expensive.:exp:

Ok sorry about that, are you planning on doing the work yourself or having a shop do it?

yeah- I want to get some 35 to 38 inchers under it. I am planning on putting air bag suspension too, so I can alter the ride height. Umm what else, oh, I would like to use leaf springs, and shocks, but not coil overs. It is going to be a show truck, with a full audio install. thanks for the warm welcome, oh yeah befor I forget, when I meant cheaper, I meant I did not want to install 2 rockwell 2.5 tons. lol they are like 5-7 grand each. well thanks for the help, if you guys know how I could get enough lift for 35s without axle swap that would be awesome too. later all.

well you could get the new superlift 4" suspension lift and get some http://www.perrysfabnfiber.com/. and you should be set for 35's. i dont think the front axles on the 95+ can hold up to anything more than 35's.

94 was the last year of the square front (first generation).

alrighty, I am wondering then, when did they revise the suspension? at www.superlift.com they only have a lift for explorers up to 95- I just want to be positive befor I go spend a grand.

I just realized I am wrong- the lift from superlift is between 91- 94. will that fit a 96 at all? I reallly need to lift the 66 (4wd) let me know what I should do if you know, need 35 inchers under it.

Superlift's add in the 4 wheel parts wholesalers magazine states that they make kits for 96-2001 Explorers. Now you just have to find out which one. Try calling 4 wheel parts in your area.

With Dana 60's becoming more difficult to find. I will recommend the following:

1. Dynatrac - This is where you want to go if you want done right, the first time. I called inquiring about my F-150 and they quoted me a price of $7000 front and rear. Keep in mind Dynatrac's are 35 spline and the housing is a wee bit beefier than the stock ones. They will even keep the same axle over setup, such as Coils, rather than Leaf's, which is the easiest way to go with on the following.

2. A Dana 44 up front from a 79-prior Bronc' or Light Truck. A 9-inch gives you a lot of flexibilty as there are many companies who still make trick items for this rear. www.currieenterprises.com is an excellent website to visit.

3. You may call around to local junkyards, but the downside is getting 60's off of the same vehicle, different gear ratios, widths, etc. I was going to put 60's on my F-150 before I sold it.
