My understanding is that the hose hanging under the back of my Trac is a axle vent hose or differential vent hose.

It is completely unattached. Can someone send me a pic or tell me where the hose goes to?

Thanks,

One end goes on a nipple on the top driver's side of the axle housing. The other end goes up to a cross member located behind and above the rear axle. IIRC there is a spring metal clip that holds that end up in place.

The rubber vent hose tends to rot over time. You can just replace it with a piece of 3/8" vacuum line. I'd guess it needs to be around 18" long. It's important to keep water out of the rear diff. you might want to change the diff fluid if the hose has been missing for a while.

See the photo in the below posting... Oh, I see you've already seen it.

Here's a picture where you can see the hose on the axle.

That's the hose that's on the left curling up? Do you know an approximate cost to have a garage replace the fluid?

Yes the hose that curls down from the cross member on the left. It connects to a nipple which is located about 1/2 down the left axle tube. The cost of changing the rear diff fluid is approx $18 x 3 for three quarts of full synthetic 75W140 gear oil, about $7 for a tube of RTV Ultra Black and if you have an LSD diff add another $12 for Ford LSD additive, plus labor, and garage markup for supplies.

Tip: Before changing the fluid, check your axle seals and pinion seal for any sign of leaking. If they'er leaking, now's the time to replace the seals.
