We have a 1979 F250 Ranger, and I'm curious as to what axles it has. Its a 4x4, 3/4 ton, automatic, with a solid front axle, and a 400 c.i. engine. I dont know if any of this info can determine, but it might! If I went and looked around on them would they say? Because I really want to know what its got under it.
Thanks!

Grant

It is more than likely a dana 60 rear. Some where around where the cover bolts on to the housing and where the axle tubs go out there should be a number cast into like I said probably a 60 rear. The front could be a dana 44 or a dana 60. Look at the same areas as the rear for a number cast into the housing. Don't worry if the front one says 60 on it in is worth nothing and should be shipped to me immediatly so I can dispose of it for you. Hope this helps you out.

Just read in four wheeler that the 79 may have a Dana 60 front and Dana 70 rear. If so - you should be very happy! The '79 F series was rated as one of the all-time best-buy values for 4x4's because of it's axle combination.

Was that in the issue with the red and yellow Z71 on the cover? I saw the best buys for the earlier years but didnt really read through it. I'll have to check it out at school.

Also, does the number of bolts in the housing cover make a diference? They're always talking about the bolts in the rearend and things like that in 4 wheeler, so I didnt know. Both front and back have 10 in them.

Grant,
Yes - the one with the Z71 on the cover. GM refers to their eaxle/differentials in #bolts (10-bolt, 12-bolt and so on), Ford goes by inches (8.8, 9, 10.25) and Dana numbers their axles (30, 35, 44, 50, 60, 70)
That issue had some interesting reading - beefing up trannies and transfer cases among other things

Well I checked out the article yesterday, and according to that, it has a C6 transmission, NP203 transfer case, Dana 44 front, and a Dana 60 rear. Booyah! :D
