Mercer, Wow, that's a lot of questions, lets see what I can do. If just one goes out, yes it will do this. No there is not a way for you to check. I don't know how much a new one is. Yes you can buy a junkyard one, but as with any junkyard part, take your chances. Not just any Ford reverse sensor will fit. Actually it may fit, and connect, but may not be the same internally. Get one for your vehicle. And lastly, there is no way to turn it off so you can use only the ones that work. At the dealership there is an easy test for them using the scantool and a good tech can isolate and correct the concern quickly. Then again, the part will be cheaper from a junkyard, and you could swap it into each position to see if the problem is cleared. If not,..try the next position, etc. Good luck. In the meantime, just use your mirrors and turn around to look, like the rest of us.

How do you remove the backup sensors from the rear bumper of a 2002 Ford Explorer ?QUOTE="Limited02, post: 2312910, member: 56985"]Mine work when they want too:) There is a thread about this and most people are buying them from ebay and replaceing them all. Seemed like you need to take the rear bumper cover off to change them. Not too hard but mostly a timely thing. I'll see if I can find the thread.

This may help some-

How

They click when they work. Put it in reverse and put ear next to each sensor, find the one not clicking.

Obviously, trust the person in the car not to let the brake off and don't suck in too many fumes.

Bumper comes off to replace them. It's not complicated if you've done it. Search the bumper for screws. The plastic tread has press fittings that also secure it.

Go to a wrecking yard and figure out how to remove one. The work on yours. Pick up a sensor (or 2-6) while there.
