i have a strange problem that has 3 of my grandfathers ford dealership techs scracthing their head. my 98 explorer 4.0sohc auto 4x4 with 111k on the clock runs good other than it has a low idle speed thats erratic but smooth and at a highway speed u let off the gas and it starts backfiring, not loudly but hard enough u can feal it. i thought maybe it was the auto 4x4 trying to kick on but it does it in 4 high. we thought it was the iac valve so they did that and the entire intake removed and cleaned and other than starting a lot nicer in the morning still backfires. can the timing chain tensioner be going out again (replaced at 34k) and with the change in timing make it backfire? it has a motor noise when its cold but when the motor is warm it is fine, not like a knocking but a old wore out a/c compressor cycling sound. it backfires louder and harder if u are out of overdrive. no check engine light and nothing stored in the ecm. it runs perfectly fine otherwise and gets 19-20 mpg on the open road. somthing im missing? please help.
