Backpressure and valves/torque

I am just curious as what backpressure has to do with low end torque and why an open exhaust can burn valves? I would think that the less restriction the better.....

i dont know about torque, but it can ruen the valves because for a fraction of a second the intake and outtake valves are open at the same time and with no back pressure it will allow raw fuel to burn around the valves and what not, super heating them.
