bad ac compressor?

whenever any of my air settings are on, except for the "head" setting, the revs bounce every 2-3 seconds. its drops then goes up, like its about to stall, but revs. and it sounds like the compressor keeps clicking on and off.... what do i need to do to fix this? is it cheap, easy, or should i pay my mechanic to do it?

and its an 01 sport 4.0 sohc

Freon level is low and will cause the constant cycling. There is dye from the factory that you might be able to see. It is green to the eye.

You can recharge it and it may be empty again in 5 minutes or 5 months but rest assured there is a leak. A non leaking freon system can run fine after 5 or 12 years.

Yes A/c runs whenever defrost is on.

you can try a can or 2 of stop leak freon too. that usually works great.

If freon is low will it also cause the compressor to chirp? I just replaced by belt with a gator and my tensioner as well. It chirps when I put on the defrost or a/c. I also noticed that whe at a stop light with the defrost on and I go it seems like its doesnt want to go then its fine.
