- 2004 Eddie Bauer Explorer
I recently purchased a 2004 Eddie Bauer Explorer with a 4.6L V8. I pulled the codes and I'm getting code 420 which from what I have read means one or more of my cats aren't working right.
I am also getting two codes that say misfire in cyl. #4 and misfire at less than 1000 rpms. I tried to do some research about how to fix the problem and I found that sometimes the plastic intake manifold can crack which leads to coolant misfiring the plugs. But from what I could tell the problem usually only happens in vehicles 2002 and older. Since mine is a 2004 I wasn't sure if this was possible.
Also it seems that if the manifold cracks its near the front of the engine, but I am getting a misfire in the rear of the engine. I checked my coolant level and it is low, but I can't tell if where it's leaking.
Right after I purchased the vehicle I replaced all the plugs with motorcraft direct replacements, so those shouldn't be causing the problem. Is it possible the coil pack is bad. If so I thought it would misfire at all rpms.
Can anyone give me advice on where to start to diagnose the problem. I'd hate to spend the time and money replacing the manifold if that's not the problem. And I'd prefer not to spend the $90 to have the dealership tell me what's wrong with it. But I'd like to get the problem fixed so it doesn't damage the new cat I evenutally get put on. Thanks in advance.
