I start driving my mom to the doctor in her Explorer, about 5 miles away from home it starts making this nasty type squeaking and rattling noise and starts to miss pretty bad.I pull off the road shut it off and look under the hood, start it back up and hear the same noise as it cranks over and starts up.I drive back home and shut it off,my dad starts it up later to put it in the garage and said it made the same noises again.I wasn't home at this time but he took the plugs out to do a compression test and now the starter takes a crap.We did turn the motor over by hand with a ratchet and socket, turns over a little over 1 revelotion than gets real stiff.I was wondering maybe a bent pushrod bad rocker arm or perhaps a bad lifter this motor has 76,000 original miles on it my parents have owned it since new.
I also wandered if anybody else has had this happen to them.

Thanks Mark

We took the valve covers off today everything looked okay so we took the shaft rockers off and it still does the same thing turns over about a turn and gets stiff again.

Thanks Mark.

Found The Problem

The flywheel was bent and broken bad around where it bolts to the crankshaft.

Glad to hear you found the problem. I'm surprised you were able to start it with a shot flywheel. I'll have to keep this in mind for future reference!

Bent Flywheel $$$

OMG This just happend to my sons explorer YESTERDAY!!

How much to fix?? Please let me know cause dear old dad will have to help with $$.

Flywheel

The flywheel was only $60.00 from advance auto parts,we fixed the vehicle our selves but a tranny shop would probably charge alot of money it was a pain in the butt getting out.If you take the tranny out yourself make sure you unhook the y- pipe from the exhaust manifolds we didn't and that is why it was such a pain in the butt.It went back together alot better than it came apart with y-pipe out of the way, good luck if you do it yourself.

took a look around this siite and found another guy same problem $800. I'm stuck with this weather and a rental at $40.00...just have to get it done. No one came to work to day cause of storm can't even get an estimate.

Bad Engine Noise

I forgot to tell you we also had to buy a new spacer that goes between the flexplate and the crank but it was less than $20.00 from Ford.I might have been able to reuse it but i fell on the floor when i knocked it lose from the flexplate.

This seems to be happening alot latley, my 1993 xlt has done it twice in the last year and a half. Its been about four months since I last fixed it so im keeping my fingers crossed. I know all about that y-pipe to, the first time I took the tranny I didn't remove it and wasted two hours trying to fanagle the tranny around it, trust me it won't work!:banghead: Has anyone heard what could be causing this to happen? Everyone I ask is stumped.
