Hey guys, thought I'd throw this out there and see if anyone has had the same problem. I've searched around on here but can't find anything specific enough yet. I've got a 1997 X xlt with control trac 4X4 ( damn auto hubs! ). If I take off from a dead stop too fast I get a really bad clicking, grinding kinda noise coming from up front:mad: . Now before someone tells me it's the front wheels kicking in or it's because I'm on dry pavement, it really never matters what surface I'm on OR if I have it set on auto4X4 or already have it in 4HI or LOW. I could be in mud and still I hear it grind and slip. I don't know if it's a problem with the transfer case seeing as the hubs are always engaged with the control trac or a relay of some kind but I'm worried I'll do more harm than good if I leave it alone. I love playing in the mud but can't anymore due to the slipping up front. Any help is greatly appreciated as I've always gotten amazing answers from the members on here. Thanks ahead of time guys!

I have a problem like the one you describe here. Have you solved it? I havent!

i have an 03 with a similer problem it ended up being my pinion bearings in the front diff.

Grinding gone!

Hey guys, sorry to hear you had the same problem as me. It turns out I had more than one problem. First off my hub/bearing assembly was on it's way out and to top it off the gears in the front diff need to be replaced. I drained the gear oil out and found a lot of metal shavings!:fire: Hopefully yours wont be as bad but I replaced the hub and gears and she's good to go now!:D

I have the same problem as you do but it does that when i am driving and when i am turning. especially when i am turning. I took it and droped it off at the shop and they are looking at it first thing in the morning so when i find out i will post to possibly help you out

I just had the same problem with my 99 sport. It ended up being the output shaft inside the transfer case had a stripped gear. I took the front drive shaft off and took it for a ride. If the noise goes away, then it is your transfer case.
