My X has been running beautifully (closing in on 120K miles within a few weeks) but my gas mileage sucks. It hasnt changed much with my recent mods either.. its always been around 13-14 since i bought it with 65K miles. My plugs and wires are the ORIGINAL ones and i pulled a plug out today and noticed it looks really crappy.

Im planning on putting on just Bosch platinums (not the +4's) and some Bog Warner wires. I was looking into "high performance" wires and crap like that but even the cheapies are $60 after shipping (taylor spiro, or Jacobs) and i can get the Bog Warner for $29 total because i work at a car place. Anything wrong with that set-up?? i never figured wires would really perform that much different.

But my main point-- should i expect better MPG from this?

Oh yea.. i know someones going to say motorcraft plugs or something different. i would get those but we stock Bosch where i work (STS- if you've heard of them) so i figured theres nothing wrong with paying "cost" for platinums.

Yes, you should expect better mileage from your X after a tune up like that. The motor can go 100k miles before needing a tune up like that.

You shouldn't have any problems replacing the stock plugs with the Bosch brand plugs. However I beleive a few people on this board have had some problems with em. Then again I could be getting them mixed up with the +4's cuz I know for sure that people on this board have had problems with those plugs.

High performance ignition coils aren't going to do a hell of a lot on a relativly stock X except for makeing your wallet lighter. The only really advantage with them is how long they last.... which is still not worth the money considering that coils should be replaced every 100K miles.

If I were you I would run a fuel system cleaner few a few tanks of gas to help with the mileage. It's cheap, and I am sure you will be pleased with it.

Good Luck.

In my neverending quest for improved mileage, I picked up mileage when I changed to Jacobs wires.

I would use only Motorceaft double platnium plugs.

Good luck.....

hey al,

How much did the wires change MPGs?

And why only Motorcraft double platinums?

Wires a steady 1-2 MPG increase. The Motorcraft plugs work well, thats why.

where did you get the wires from and for how much? I couldnt find any Jacobs made for my SOHC.

Are they really worth probably the $20-$30 more dollars im gonna spend rather than paying $29 for borg warner?

And im getting the bosch platinum for near nothing cause of work.. maybe ill get the platinum +2....

I got my wires at Performance Products. If cheap is what you want get cheap ones; just remember you usually get what you pay for.....

I've been getting 13-14 mpg for so long now (I have an on going log for 2 years) and I tried this product and I got 16+ mpg for 4 straight tank full. No BS.

16+ eh, I should try that stuff.

I didn't keep any mileage logs 2 years ago, but I don't think my truck gained any MPG by switching to Jacobs wires. I'm getting about the same 12-15 as I did with mc wires. I also run mc plat plugs, though back then I ran autolite plats. It's an apples and oranges comparison between aldives air-dammed, roof rack-less (i think) SOHC 2nd gen and my 1st gen OHV with heavy grille guard, cab visor, and other things that induce max drag though!
:)

Yea, I was surprise too. I did not do any other change or modification prior to getting 16+. Maybe a coincidence? If so, I'm not complaining. :)

What gas did you use, did you use a different brand or something?

Nope. I have the speedpass. So I always use Exxon or Mobil. I just got another full tank- 16.1 mpg. :)

Mine was getting like 220 miles a ank full..I had my transmission fluid and filter done, I had the cooling system flushed, Changed the fluid in transfer case and front diff..I also had the fuel system flushed with wynns..After that i got about 320 miles...It has been about 10k miles ago and making its way back to what i originally got...Sometimes my engine acts like a V8 and other times you have to press the gas half way to get moving..
