HA I think I got something like that. I have a hard pull to the right so I'm starting with the brakes.

Taxmann? Did you fix it?

nope too many combinations of things. not too bad now or I am just used to it.

Well, that's a great thing about this site...you're never alone in your problems

JDraper has heard the God Awful racket mine makes and it's been getting steadily worse, very much like what you describe, Taxxman. Only mine doesn't get worse in 4wd- it stays the same. Sounds like metal on metal grinding, once per rotation of the wheels and it sounds like tires rubbing even at only a half turn of the steering wheel ( there's no POSSIBLE way that my tires would rub at only that much!). You can definitely feel it through the floor boards and it even affects steering input.

I thought it was the rotors (which were warped anyway) so Jeff Draper helped me to replace them, no dice. New brake pads (and discovered that my parking brake is cracked, but oh well) and we checked the ball joints, still nothing. A mechanic suggested the front diff bearings, but if you've already torn yours apart to no avail, then By George I'm not blowing $$ to find out the same thing, lol.

Any chance it could be the power steering? Maybe the steering itself (Call me dumb, but we have rack and pinion, right? No? Yes?)

Somebody out there has to know!!!!!!! It's embarassing and aggravating to hear AND feel that noisy SOB growl when I turn a corner, speed up, slow down, etc...

I didn't re-read everything here, but in mine I replaced the hub...errr whatever you can non-manual/non-automatic, but still not a wheel-bearing thingy. Either way it was $200 and the noise stopped. My hard pull was not found, but fixed by replaceing my brakes. Did the parking brake in an hour or two, no problems, working nice. I have a vibration over 70mph, steering pulls a little bit right, 4wd still messed up, but it's prolly the shift motor.

GOing to put on BL, do the ball-joints, new tires, and alignment and see where I stand.

The play in my steering, where my vehicle wanders is either ball-joints, The connection of the steering through the firewall, or worse yet, the rack and pinion, yes, I believe we have it.

As described in other posts, most people with those problems felt HARD steering one way and easy or normall the other. I've mentioned rack and pinion everytime I talk to people and it's iqnored, even though I've read it's easy to damage. If it's so easy, then I would think a "good" off-roading trip could mess it up something good, but I don't have that much experience.

Ok, so Mine's Probably Different. But I did re-read the whole thread this time

When I put mine in 4wd I heard grinding, but it's not that loud, but does sound like metal on metal. As stated above, I think my shift motor is in need of a cleaning, 'cause it's banging under any stress.

My main problem was the noise, which was the bearing. I think the other side might be going, but it's made the same noise as it did when I bought it. I guess if my pull isn't the alignment, I know where to do.

Taxmann, you said that you lifted you truck and tested it? and no noise? In that case it does sound like the more stress the more of a problem. Since your whole frontend has been torn apart, I guess you should concider the T-case. Have you flushed it?

When my Auto was acting up, a quick flush quieted her down. Now, 3 month later, I have to clean or replace the shift motor.

hrmmm.... Group purchase on some 97 t-cases! :D hee hee hee.

Reving it i w/o the drive shafts in seems like a good idea. Also, what about towing it to speed without the driveshafts and seeing if the noise is still there. A buddy and a tow strap can go a long way!! :D

I gave up on my noises long ago. My T-case is in good shape, fluid is always clean when I change it.;)
