Ok, I'm a Chevy guy doing a favor for my daughter. I only mention the Chevy thing because my Ford experience is about zero.I am experienced with all aspects of general mechanics, just not Ford specific. The vehicle is a 01 Explorer sport 4.0 sohc engine.173K and had been doing the valve train rattle. The veh was a bargain at $2800 and seemed to be running ok, just noisy. Not being up on the 4.0 engines I didn't recognize the rattle as unusual. The vehicle just quit running a few days ago and after troubleshooting anfd eliminating the simple fixes such as sensors, coilpack etc and verifying that it has spark and 60# fuel pressure, a compression test shows zero on the drivers side. I believe the cam or cams have skipped time. I will be trying to repair the engine myself with the help of a bro in law and need to know if it is feasible to replace the tensioners and retime the cams. Also, is the 4.0 an interference design (will I have bent valves too?) thanks in advance for any pointers. I have read the posting on the tech forum about the valve train rattle and think I can handle the mechanical part. Chuck.

It sounds like a timing chain tensioner issue. I would do a search for it and see what you come up with.

Ok, I bought a timing kit and the right tools on ebay.$285 for the kit and $139 for the tools.I will be pulling the engine soon and hope that all the valves are not bent.Wish me luck. Chuck.

Welcome to this forum! Could you make a step by step thread on this repair starting with an explaination of what tools are required? The article might go in the useful threads section if Rick likes it, and you could get some elite time on the forum.

luck chuck

Well, it took a bit over a month to complete due to a bunch of minor delays, but the engine is back in and running fine! We replaced both timing cassettes and the balancer tensioners. There was a lot of specialty tool searching and time spent ordering small parts.I have listed the timing tool set on Ebay if anybody is interested.
