I dont think it will work - I think the bellhousing patterns are different between the S and the W.

Welcome to this forum! Keep in mind that most shops will say that it has to be rebuilt. What are the symptoms? It could be something like the solenoid block or worn servo bores. Do you have a flashing overdrive light?

Yes it was slipping between 3 & 4 gear also OD lite was flashing

I had shop change fluid and it seem to help a bit but I am not driving it

So it still will give me code when i use that code tool? Sorry for dumb questions

Well my reader does not do trans so I guess I am out of luck

What I dont understand is that Tag on door code is "V" 5r55s

But everywhere I look it says it should be 5r55w

i have 2002

BrooklynBay is right. The transmission shop will usually tell you it needs to be rebuilt.......usually without even looking at it. Several months ago, I e-mailed a transmission shop about my transmission when it first started slipping, and the guy told me it was probably the torque converter ---- which is "only" the most expensive component in the whole transmission. (Crooked b@st@rds) I know there are some honest mechanics, lawyers and politicians out there....somewhere. Keep in mind there are at least 6 or 7 "minor" things that you can do that might fix slipping before doing a rebuild. These include a simple clogged filter, band adjustment (tightening a bolt), changing a valve body gasket or plugging in a new shift sensor solenoids. Good luck.........you've definitely come to the right place. People on here really care and you're in good hands with BrooklynBay.

FORD Transmission DTC - Diagnostic Trouble Codes. OBDII P0700-P0790.

Also, have a look at this.
It may be possible that you only have a faulty pressure control sensor. If your transmission shop pulled that trouble code for you...........then they already know this. But, no dealership or transmission shop ( I know of ) is going to let you walk out the door with a slipping transmission for only $100 bucks - including labor.

Before you rebuild that transmission, at least replace this sensor for $27.95

i got this website from BrooklynBay a few months back. Even if you eventually rebuild the tranny, you'll be buying this piece regardless. So....at least give it a try now.

Also, get a quote from your transmission shop for the rebuild. For me a remanufactured 5r55e is about $600 with shipping. I can disconnect everything from my tranny and get it ready to be lifted and swapped out. So, I called several auto shops and asked them "how much" to unbolt one and bolt the other one in and I would do the rest. One guy said it would take about an hour and would charge me $100. All-in cost would only be about $700 vs. a $1,000 - $2,000 (rebuild) depending on who I called. Hmmmmm ??????

Ok what I do not understand is that the Tran code on cert Label on Door is "V" which is a 5r55s but everywhere i look on net that was not in this Explorer until 2004

So how can i tell what the heck we have?

Explorer (4.0L) 95-01 4 Rwd 4R44E, 5R55E
Explorer (5.0L) 96-01 4 Rwd 4R70W
Explorer (4.0, 4.6L) 02-03 5 Rwd 5R55W
Explorer (4.0, 4.6L) 2004 5 Rwd 5R55S

I assume you have a V-6 ?

according to the Hollander interchange manuals, a 2dr Explorer Sport and a 4dr Sport Trac both have a 5R55E tranny.

the 4dr (non-Sport Trac) Explorer should have a 5R55W tranny.

whether or not the Hollander manual is correct, I can't testify...Ford is notorious for changing things in the middle of model years.

According to the trouble code, you may only need the electronic pressure control solenoid. That e-bay module looks like everything. And, it is all used. If you put the used module in and it doesn't work ......... you won't know if the used solenoids are bad or if you have other problems.
