Hello all, I have a 2000 Explorer XLS, 4WD and recently have developed a pretty bad vibration starting at 30 mph and continuing hard up through 45 mph, then over 45 up to at least 65mph the vibration changes to a more high frequency type of vibration, sort of feels like driving over the grooves on the thruway. I feel it mostly in the gas pedal and the steering wheel, but the whole truck shakes. It happens mainly when accelerating but at the higher speeds I can still feel the vibes. Don't relly feel vibes when truck decelerating. The truck has 108,000 miles on it and nothing in the suspension(other than shocks) has been changed. I just put new front brakes on. There doesn't seem to be any play in the 12 and 6:00 positions in each of the front wheels. There is a very small play in the 3 and 9:00 positions on both fronts. The rear driveshaft is tight as can be, no play at all. No difference in vibes with 4WD on. I did notice on the front driveshaft, near the transfer case, a shiny rectangular area about 0.5" by 2.5" with no rust, rest of driveshaft rusty. Had the tires balance but still vibrates. I hope I gave enough information on this problem, but I really need to fix this. I think I can handle the mechanical work. Thanks.

Anybody? I really need some help on this.

Bump.

Anybody?

Could have thrown a weight off the driveshaft - remove the front driveshaft and see if the problem goes away.

Thanks, I'll try that tomorrow nite. It crossed my mind but I didn't realize the front driveshaft would turn enough in 2WD to cause a vibration so severe.

I removed the 6 bolts on the CV side of the DS and three of the Torx screws on the U-joint side of the DS and then the torx bit broke  in the fourth screw. Tried to drill it out, grab it with a socket, all without luck. Are there any tricks to getting this last bolt out.

grind off the head of the bolt, then you might be able to remove it with a pencil eraser or an easy out.
