The rotor has the coil in the center. It is the part that "rotates". The voltage regulator applies voltage to this part. The voltage then goes magnetically (like a transformer, but with an air gap) to the stator, or "stationary" part which is another set of coils. The rotor gets its voltage from a set of brushes, and slip rings. The diodes are used to rectify the AC voltage into DC.
