Just installed new battery in wife's 03 explorer. Decided to use a
memory keeper to hold onto computer settings/codes. Made
sure the power point had power to it so memory keeper would be
able to provide the 9 volt battery power to the electrical system.
Plugged in the memory keeper to the power point and proceeded
to disconnect the battery. As soon as I disconnected the
negative terminal ...all I could hear was a relay clicking on/off.
Reconnected the negative terminal and clicking stopped. Pulled
the memory keeper and decided to use a 3 amp battery charger
connected directly to the battery cable terminals. I then
disconnected battery with no relay chatter and went ahead and
swapped the battery. Swap went well with no problems and
vehicle held settings/codes.
All I can figure is that the 9 volt memory keeper battery was
trying to keep the battery saver relay engaged and that is what
I heard clicking. Just wanted to know if anyone else has
encountered this and if they know if it indeed was the battery
saver relay I heard chattering. If it was...I was wondering if I
had waited 20 to 30 minutes after closing the door ( which shuts
down the interior lights and starts the timing sequence to engage
the battery saver relay) then tried to disconnect battery
terminals...would I have been able to use the memory keeper
to retain computer settings/codes and not get the chattering
relay?
Thanks,
George
