Do Beadlocks fit on any rims or do you have to by a certain brand of rims? Also how do they attach to the rim?

Yes they can be made to do that. However they are no longer DOT approved. :) You send them to stockton wheel and they can do any wheel I belive. They attach by bolting THROUGH the outside of the rim. Then the tire gets squished between the ring and the rim with the bolts going through it I think. Not 100% positive though. Check out Stockton wheel, and summit racing they are the two that I know of. MRT is a brand name thats pretty popular also.

I forgot which company has them, but they've got DOT legal beadlocks....aka streetlocks....I think...I've seen em in a 4x4 magizine...I think it was 4 wheel parts warehouse
Hope that helps
Pete

It is my understanding that "Streetlocks" are FAKE beadlocks -- just for show -- and that currently no beadlock rim is capable of passing the tests for DOT approval.

Ah, well, that is what I saw, and knew...I had heard of no test reports etc.
Pete

Yep just for show. Real beadlocks cannot pass the dot approved blow-out tests. They are in fact safer but there is all kinds of reasons why they don't accually pass.

Does anyone know what these real reasons are? They are having a similar discussion over on the POR board=

Champion claims that their beadlocks are street legal.

Beadlocks are not DOT approved because the tire is held on by bolts unlike regular rims. If some bolts break or come loose, your tire comes off.
Beadlock companies:
MRT
Champion
Bart
Trail Ready
1 other I can't think of

I am considering going with Barts or MRT's for my heap project.

Probably Stockton Wheels. Check www.championwheel.com, on their wheel statement, which states "While tires have many pages of DOT regulations, wheels have only three. 1. The manufacture's name. 2. Date of manufacture and 3. Load rating must be specified. As you can see by this Beadlock wheels must meet DOT specifications."

Try to avoid their homepage if possible - it has horrible music playing in the back ground. You were warned.

As far as I know, there are no street legal beadlocks available. Those street locks are just like the old explorer rim rings that came on XL rims. They are just for looks and nothing more. 4heel parts wholesale has them.

the thing with those streetlocks is that they have a thicker rim seat flange and will hopefully prevent some damage to occurr and also further prevent the tire from unseating due to a thicker seat

if you guys aren't really looking to spend a fortune on these things, there is a cheaper solution. about a year ago, i read about a procudure that works significantly well and costs only a few pennies. the idea is, you "spot" weld in a symmetrical pattern all the way around the top of the outside lip of your steel wheels and therefor create a sort of redneck-rigged bead lock. from what i read in peterson's 4 wheel & offroad, this a very effective procedure being used by many. i'll see if i can find the magazine, but it was a while ago. good luck guys- russel

after furhter thought, i really don't see how that would help at all. the only thing that it might do would increase wheel strength, but that is doubtfull. sorry guys for the false info. i should think about what i post before i put it up.

on the other hand, here is an article i found while sifting through the files at Jeeps Unlimited.

hope THIS actually helps - russel
