- 96 Explorer LMTD?
I have a 96 Explorer. 4.0 V-6. 122,xxxmiles. It has problems. I put new tires on it hoping the vibration would go away. It needed tires anyway. The vibe isn't around until about 50mph and it just gets worse as you go faster. My 4WD lights flash intermintantly.
I replaced the Pass. side halfshaft. ---still vibed.
I removed the Driver side halfshaft did a quick test drive.--- still vibed
I took the front driveshaft off.---the vibe became more violent and higher pitched no longer a low tone vibe.
I checked the u-joints and checked for the driveshaft weights. All seemed fine. The only thing I can see that may be wrong is at the back of the T-case. It seems like there is too much play(up and down) with the flange the driveshaft bolts to.
Is there a bearing at the back that goes bad and can be replaced easily? I hoped to drive this thing to work this year just to put some miles on it.
Would it be possible to remove the T-case and put a 2wd tail shaft on the tranny instead? I don't want to put a huge chunk of $ into this thing.
