I just posted a hello on the new membership forum. I just brought a 1995 Explorer Sport 4x4 5 speed that I would like to fix for my young son (15 yr old) for his first car. This is my first Explorer and I have some basic questions. The car has 187,000 miles on it but looks and seems to run fine. The only problem is it jumps out of overdrive. I guess I need to take it in to a transmission shop. If they need to remove the transmission to fix this problem should I have them change out the slave clyinder since its out and it has very high mileage (somebody told me I should sine if it goes bad you have to drop the transmission to get to the slave clyinder)? Also I'm not that familar with the 4L V6 engine. With this kind of mileage what would one suggest as routine maintance to asure that it would leave my son on the side of the road. I do not know the maintance history of the explorer so lets assume that the previous owner did not do much. One other question, the dome light comes on but does not go off for a long while (timed out?). It does this for both doors does this mean both door switches are bad?
Thanks ahead of time for any help and/or advise you folks can give me.:p:

hello
welcome.
The trannys in the 95 leave a lot to be desired. I suspect a full rebuild would be in your best interests. Add a remote filter and cooler ( Perma-Cool & B&M respectivly are the two I use )

Search Aldive, he says he is getting an impressive average of 30 MPG's out of his explorer. The rest of us peons seem to hover in the low to mid -20's depending on numerous factors.

The door switches like to fail a lot too. That is a fairly easy and ecconomical fix.

Thanks for stoping by

I thought it would of had a manual transmission if it was 5 speed with a slave cylinder? if it is 5th syncro ring and gear/hub are probably worn, if its notchy getting into 5th Im assuming the shifter rail detents are ok(detents give it the notchiness when engaging the gear). Might be able to repair in vehicle after the transfer case is removed<---if that is even the problem.

Slave cylinder is like a clutch fork but uses fluid, sometimes they leak and then you have trouble getting into gears, doesnt release the clutch, should be changed every major overhaul or clutch change

For the lights, is long time 1 minute or about 20 minutes? should the open door light illuminate on the dash if one of the doors was open? I think the Exploders have this light, I forget ha

Thanks

Yes its a 5 speed manual. I got the manual because I think all young drivers need to learn to drive a manual just in case.

The dome light comes on and stays on for about 20 minutes or longer. The door ajar light comes on when the door is opened but goes out when the door is shut but light remains on. Does this sound like the door switch.

Thanks

No it doesnt sound like the door switch at all.

Check the dimmer switch. That is the only other thing it could be.
I dont know if the 95 is the same as the 2000, but the dimmer switch dims and turns the light on.

That is so true... I am so glad that I was taught how to drive a stick because that's all I ever want now. :D

Anyway, now when you say it pops out of 5th gear does the shifter move when this happens or does it stay still?
