Here is the deal I am looking to replace the factory speakers as I have cracked the right front one. I was wondering what everyone thinks is the best replacement for the money. Yes I am going to replace them all while I am at it.

You have 2 routs really.

1.) Components (the perfered)

2.) Coaxials (the easiest)

Components will involve crossovers, tweeters, and other stuff like where to mount the tweeters. If you looking to simply drop somthing in to place I would do a wabbit suggests and get some Pioneer or Alpine 5x8's. Of course I advise everyone to LISTEN to the speakers before you buy them. And remember, you dont have to buy them where you listened to them at.

components are great!!! (but expensive...)

If you can swing it, I would agree, components are great. But they are more expensive, especially when you're looking at buying two pairs. My Infinity Kappa components were $180/pr, on sale.
Like I said, they sound great but I doubt if they sound twice as good as the above Pioneers for half the price.

I actually installed the 2 way pioneers pictured above in my girlfriend's explorer. The sound pretty good (not enough treble for me though.) Pioneer speakers are very decent sounding speakers for the price. I would recommend them. I have also liked Polks, but they can get pricey. Also, what type of music do you listen to most of the time? That may influence your decision quite a bit. And as said earlier, listen to a BUNCH of speakers. Go down to the car audio shop and play with the speakers on display. If you can afford it, spring for the components, you won't be disappointed. Hope this helps!

Crutchfield has Infinity Reference 5.25" components for 99.99 on sale. But if you dont' wanna worry about the tweeters or the crossovers. I would go with a set of 5.25" coaxils. Just about every 5.25" coaxil that crutchfield sells is less than 100 a pair which means you could get them some where else cheaper but with out the wiring harnesses and free tech support. http://www.tmselectronics.com has very low prices and they carry some of the top of the line stuff. The have Alpine 5.25" for $75.00. that's cheaper than crutchfield's price on kenwoods, pioneer, infinity, and RF. The alpine's are a much better speaker than the others and cheaper! You will need an adapter plate for the 5.25".

Well the speaker project will be on hold for a while. While at the lake earlier in the week my battery decided to quite so I had to replace that. Though the pioneers look nice I think I will stop by the radio shop today and see how they sound

Hey Brian...I have the Pioneer 6x8's in my doors..I think they are great! Yes, there is better, but they are really good for $90.00 a pair! Mine are the 3-way 180w max. Sorry to here bout the battery man!

the pioneers sound good,I have 2 in the doors (3-way) as well as the rear.I'm happy with them,and I had some extensive stuff (for me anyway !!) done to the system,.

Brian:,not sure of model #'s of my 3-way pioneers,however,when you look at the rear speakers through the stock grill,you can see the raised white letters around the outside of the cone,just like the ones in the lower row in one of the above posts.

Just so everybody knows, the pioneers are available for significantly less than Crutchfield at audio-etcetera. I know they don't have the same customer support but for $30 less per pair for the 6865s I think they are definatly worth it. You could almost buy 3 pairs for the same as 2 from Crutchfield.
