When I tried searching I got a bunch of stuff about how to change the plugs...

Anyways, I need new plugs and wires and I have always read about the Bosch platinum +4's but my buddy (car guy) seems to tell me that they are excessive for my SOHC and will just wear out faster. He is trying to recomend some +2's.
Also, what is my best bet for wires? MSD?

thanks.

I'm saying Motorcraft.

Just sticking with the Motorcraft is great.

I use motorcraft pluge with Jacobs wires

The X needs the double platnium plugs. That is plat. on both of the electrodes. It needs this because one bank fires from the inner electrode to the outer and the other bank fires outer to inner. Anything else doesnt last near as long. Motorcraft / autolite dbl. plat. is the way to go.
NAPA or Autozone wires work just fine.

Motorcraft for me.

So no clear choice eh? :p

Sorry to sound for lack of a better word.....stupid, but does +2 mean double platinum? when you say double platinum are they called 'Motorcraft double platinums' or does double platinum mean +4 as in 'Motorcraft +4's?

Thanks for the replies guys

I use Motorcraft or Bosch platinums, just plain old platinums. It depends on which is on sale at the time I do the change. I get the exact same performance out of them both.
I tried the double plats and the Splitfire crap and got bad gas milage and rough idle too.

Motorcraft has both single and double platinums available. Get the double platinums. That means it has a platinum center AND ground electrode.

Bosch +2 and +4 is the number of ground electrodes. I recommend against Bosch.

Over the years there have been numerous complaints on this board from folks who changed their plugs to Bosch and had some difficulty in some form or another. Based on those alone (with no personal experience to back it up), I would join Sparky in cautioning against Bosch plugs in Explorers.

Taylor wires are GREAT especially for the $$$.

I got mine from truckperformance.com years ago for el cheapo.

I am now in the market for some new ones for my V8 and will likely go with Ford Racing :) I have use the Bosch +4 plugs in all sorts of engines and they work just fine, but I too reccommend the Motocraft Double Platinums, the Bosch's are basically too hot for our engines and well just not worth the extra $$$ and fear of something going wrong. Also the longest I have gotten a set to last was about 30K miles (too hot of a plug IMO)

AutoLite makes good plugs for the Explorer, I use them in all the Fords I own. I think AutoLite makes plugs for Motorcraft?? I have heard this but I am unable to confirm them.

As far as the wires go I have used Jacobs. They are a direct fit and a good wire if you have to remove them more than once. Most of the cheaper wires (Autozone red ones) fall apart if you try to remove them. But the AutoZone ones are lifetime warrantied, but if they are constantly breaking down inside the wire what good is the warranty.

Accel makes good wires also. I have them on my trail rig. Great wires!

thanks guys!

I usually use Bosch, or Splitfire. For the wires, I've used Accel 8.8, and I've even used 4 gauge wire! I'm sure that a lot of people will say it causes ignition noise, or computer problems, but the only thing that I've noticed is that it starts quicker, and it's more responsive. After a while the wires get "molded" into a certain shape. Until that time, they tend to bend a little bit. Accel sells boot, and metal head kits that are made to get crimped by a special ignition plier.

where can I get 99 V8 wires for a decent deal, they are spensive. oem are unreal!
