Yes I went through search to see what the actual size was... but my real question is what would SOUND BEST... I've been through 5 or 6 'boomin' systems over the past 20 years... heres my easy question:

Since I am not looking to fool with running separates in the doors, whats the better speaker size to replace the factory speakers with?

5X7?
6X8?
Convert to 5+1/4?
Convert to 6+1/2?

Not looking to spend a ton of money. I can get decent 5X7's or 6X8's for $59 per pair... like I already said not looking for yet another super loud system... just something to get me by for now... I will add a very simple amp/sub set up later... probably a single 10 or 12... 250 or 300 watt max... not looking for another 500+ watt set up... in the past I've done everything from the very first Stillwater Design's (original Kicker's) 6+1/2" sub boxes all the way up to dual 15" Fosgate subs in a custom box that took up the entire trunk... I want to keep all trunk/storage space and I am not looking to ruin my kids ear drums...

Convert to 6+1/2
that's what I did. They sound great
and from what all audio guys say
"ovals don't sound as good as circle
speakers"

I went with 4 Infiniti 6 1/2s they sound great!

What do you have to do to make them fit? I am trying to figure out what size to go with in my 98 4 door. I would rather go with 6 1/2 round if it's not too much trouble. If not, I will Ebay some 6x8 Kappa Perfects for the front and some Reference for the rear.

The only thing you need to do is drill new holes in your door frame for the 6 1/2s since the holes for your 5x7s obviously won't match up. If you have a drill it's no problems. The first day I went to do it I didn't have an electric drill at all and I was trying to do it all without very many tools outside a screwdriver lol. I went to my friends shop the next day though and had no problems once I actually had a drill and some screws :p

o.k. So you can just mount them to the door frame? Sounds easy enough. No problems with rattling or anything?

thanks again

I feared it may rattle afterward but they sound great...
so long as you atleast get 3 screws to hold it down secure
it shouldn't rattle at all... mine sound amazing..
cant wait to strap in the Kicker L7s cause this system
is gonna be slappin :D

thanks man. Appreciate the help

How difficult is door removal to get to the front speakers?

very easy, trim ring around the door handle, 2 screws behind the handle, one in the top front corner, then pull.

To mount them, do you just use self tapping screws? or what?

electric drill and door screws :D

yes small self tapping panheads work the best. if you really want a good clear sound put wal-marts "dynomat" behind the speaker on each doo panel no vibes. circles always sound better than ovals but get a good set not cheap crap at wal-mart no pioneer, sony, jenson, its all crap get good! speakers and that will make all the difference! btw hes right door panel removal 10min tops.

The best way to install the speakers is get an adapter. They are floating around ebay for about $20. If you don;t seal around the speaker and leave a gap, rear sound waves will cancel out your bass response. Before build custom door panels, I took some 1/2" mdf, cut out a shape the smae size as the stock speaker, mounted it to the stock bracket, then cut a 6" hole in the center. Easy, simple, cost effective and sounds great!

Later in the week I should have my front doors done. I'm going with a morel 3" tweeter, Eclipse 6.5" Driver and I'm debating what 8" sub would be best for the doors. Anyone have some good luch with 8's upfront? Brands? Model #'s?

sounds sweet i love eclipse speakers they always sound good. however your door deal with the mdf well that just seems like alot of work seal it with dynamat and you would be fine imo. i would like to know how you are going to seal up your front doors for the subs! that will be pretty involved too are you gonna custom a box or what? i"ve had really good luck with mtx 10" and would assume there 8"s are good too. i know some think there not good but to each his own i dont compete just love sound! what ever sub you get watch the air space needed thats another reason why i said mtx there known for shallow installs. in my personal truck i have my highs flush mounted in the a to b piller connetion, another set above my eclipse 6" mids then behind my seat [sport] i put two more 6" mids then in the rear i built a custom sub enclsure in my side pocket as i didnt have the factory sub then hid my sub amp in my jack area like another guy on this forum did, i just installed two fans in there. to keep it cool the only thing that bothers me is i have a four channel under my rear seat to run my mids and i dont have any more fans for it yet i dont think i would like my bass up front it might distort the sound.

Well, to seal the doors I'm using a spray sound dampning material. The pods Ii am making are made of fiberglass. I still have some trim work to do, will be painting the x-over displays and fitting them with light and plexi-glass. Finally, I have some custom grills I'm making too. Here's a photo of my progress:

 looks good but did you paint the arm pad to or am i mistaken? that would leave a great paint rub on your shirt on a good day! otherwise i like the color i need to go ahead and do my doors like that there getting pretty bad lets see the custom grills

Oh, and the color is stock. I got the paint code so everything matches up. I will be re-painting all the plastic interior pieces as I move front to back with the stereo install
