it's about time for an oil change. i've been running redline 10w30 sythetic, but that stuff is just to darn expensive and they don't make a 5w50 which i would like to run for summer. before i switch over to anything, i would like to get some advice. what do you all prefer? thanks-russel

I recommend AMSOIL. They don't make a 5W-50 but their 5w-30 and 10w-30 motor oils with provide better protection than anything else.

We only recommend 50 weight oils for high performance vehicles.

Greased Lightning

If you dont want to spend alot try Greased Lighting fully synthetic... I use the 10w30 just cuz I have an older x, but you can get it in a 5w..It cost about half the price of other fully synthetics(Costs me $2.12),and works just as good..Its pure USA DuPont teflon,so you know your not getting some third-world knockoff..I highly recommend it if your looking for better value. Pick it up at Discount Auto Parts...Be sure to use a good quality synthetic filter..Hope this helps

well, amsoil is the same price and about the same stuff and your right, they dont make a 5w-50. comparing a 30 synthetic to a 30 pertol is like comparing water and oil, that is why i wanted to get the 50. i know a lot of guys on here use the 50, but i just wasn't sure what kinds everybody prefered. but you guys are right, amsoil is the best. so i may just end up going w/ that.

914x4- i've heard of the greased lightning but never from someone who has actually used it. i am giong to try and find out more. thanks for the advice.

I have been mighty happy using 10W30 Mobil 1 with a Mobil 1 filter.

Yeah AMSOIL is the best, but they use Mobil 1 in all the race cars, so I don't think you could go wrong there.

BEST? Best is a relative term. The only best that we should be concerned with is that synthetic oil is BETTER than petrolium based oil, period.

Unfortunatly this is not entirely true. I have been in the automotive bussiness for over 17 years and yes ...years ago sythetic was proven to be better. However nowadays synthetic isn't all what it was compared to the petrol based oils.

nowadays petrolbased oils used in normal cars (not racecars) are much more tolerable against heat, cold etc.

You can ask your self ....BUT they use it in race cars ?...yeah...they sure do....but do you rebuild your engine every week ?...i thought not, see racecar motor run on an tolerance, if the race is 500 miles then they prep the motor to be able to run the 500 miles, if tey would all of an sudden double the lentgth of an race then you would see alot of motors getting ruined.

see racecars are devolped to run maybe 1000 miles or less, but normal car engine can run in excess of 200K miles easy....an race car aslo devolps ALOT more heat then an normal engine does and thus the oil has it alot worse then the normal motor will ever have it even in it's most extreme condition.

If you take care of your motor and you change the oils on the recommended times then you can just use normal petrol based oils.

my explorer has now 281K miles on it and it's still running ...though the piston rings are wearing out now , but further then that it's running liek the sun, and it has never seen an bottle of synthetic....just keep up with your motor en you can enjoy it along time.

people get too much into the oil thing, you can't compare race-cars with normal engines just because they are too much different from eachother....they are build different, they are used different....or do you run full throttle 3 hours at a time ?....i didn't think so.

this is just my 2cts on this whole sythetic/petrol based oils contraverse...

good advice. it's kind of like the same thing w/ K&N air filters. their designed for racing and let upwards of 40% more junk through than any other air filter. not pretty. i will probably stick to the AMSOIL. i've always used Castrol GTX or 4x4, but i like the idea of not having to change my oil every 3,000 miles:) thanks a lot guys(everybody) for the advice. -russel

And I will stick to using Mobil 1 ( crankcase, trannyt, rear end ) because it works and as a side benefit, it gives me at least 2 mpg gain.

Same goes for my KKM filter system - it works....

Uhm yeah but to what extend ?....sure it helps but is it worth reuilding the motor at ex. 100K miles for the few more horses you get or you rather drive 200+k miles with a few less horses ?...

i guess it's all an matter of opinion...and what's in your wallet i guess

Before I only use Mobil 1. Driving 100 miles per day seems to be expensive for me. Now I use the synthetic blend Quake State. The AAA magazine said that oil are all the same no matter what brand. I only depends on the additives they add in the oil.

I bought my 93 EB new and switched to Mobil 1 10-30W at 8k. At 48K I had to have the manifold removed and a new intake gasket installed under warranty. The Ford Master Technician called me over and asked me what oil I was using? Told him Mobil 1 10-30W (for hot Texas weather). He said "take a look at the "V", which had absolutey NO accumulation. He said it was cleaner than some factory engines he had enstalled! At 105K it still runs like new without any oil consumption, with pulling a small travel trailer. Mike
