Scott-

Think about why you want to switch to synthetic before you do. Do the positives really outweigh the negatives?

Whar are the negatives of Synthetic?

MAtt-
I don't think there is one. I have run this stuff in all my cars since i was 17. It cost a lot more. i think it is worth it though!

on a side note i also run Mobil 1 oil filter. I figure since i go 6000 between changes i need a good filter

I concur; I see no disadvantages to synthetic oil.

I put in mine around 1K on my V8 Explorer. I hated going to the dealership to have my engine oil changed every three months with like only 200-400 miles driven. My oil change intervals are longer depending on how much I drive. I have it changed when it hits a 3000 miles interval.

My engine runs like new as it always have been at 20K now. I use Mobil-1 with Motorcraft oil filter. I heard that Mobil-1 oil filter is good too.

Is there any truth to this. Putting synthetic in a motor that is not broken in can mess it up???

Break in

I would use synthetic oil as soon as you can. On my rebuilt engine I started using it at 3000 miles.

On a new vehicle I would not change the oil until the recommended oil change interval -what ever it is( My wifes new VW is 5000, and our Volvo was 5000m, my truck was 7500.) I believe the mfrs use a blended breakin oil that may be different than what you could replace it with. I cant find the site I saw some of this information on, but I think it was VW who did some tests that showed that if the factory fill oil was removed prematurely increased oil consumption would result. Ill search for the info., if someone else has seen this post it please.

For those of you still changing your oil at 3000 miles (because the Jiffy Lubes and the Oil cos of the world have marketed it to you) I would check the "Oil" thread for a couple of real world examples.
