Best Way to Change Transmission Fluid?

It's one of those topics where if you ask 50 mechanics you'll get 50 different answers

We bought a Toyota Corolla with 40,000 miles on it. The tranny fluid was very dark, couldn't see it was red on the dipstick. I never changed it in 120,000 additional miles. I gave the car to a friend in need about a year a go and it's still going strong.

I was afraid of changing the fluid. Since the fluid was already dark, I felt that the new detergents in the new fluid could chew up the friction material. I'll never know if a fluid change would have killed it, but I do know not changing it allowed for a good long service life
