I just picked up an 02 Eddie Bauer with the 4.6L. I know its not the best in MPG.. my last car got over 20 city, and now im lucky with 13. I have owned 2 explorers, one first gen, and one second. Any cheap/free suggestions on how to raise my MPG. I do drive it nice and easy... for the most part. I am a firefighter and when the pager goes, i go too... haha. But for the most part its slow take offs and stuff. As far as i know, the truck is completly untouched stock. Any suggestions??

Hmm Trade the Ex in for a car. Ive got an 2003 Explorer XLT Sport 4.0 v6.
Truck was getting 15 City and 18 highway all winter long, at 55'000 K I changed the stock air filter to an K&N and i switched over to all 100% mobil One synthectics and pumped all the tires up to 36 psi at all 4 corners. I have since been getting 15 in the city ( that never changes no matter what) and 20-22 on the highway. Mind you its warmer outside now as well so that may have something to do with the raise in gas mileage. at 60'000 K i'm doing the plugs and wires so that may help some more... But honestly dude when I purchased my truck I knew what the window sticker called for mileage and I really didnt care I'm currently paying $4.86 Per Gallon ( canadian) and I go threw ONE $ 68.00 tank of fuel per day. Ya people call me stupid for driving such a gas guzzler but ya know something I dont care I live one and I love my truck its very comfortable and thats why I bought it to drive it. If i wanted good mileage id buy an VW with the TD that gets 60 MPG but then i wouldnt be happy .

Hey man props for being a firefighter, one of my good friends is a firefighter as well. He has his radio on all the time and has to go on calls just like you...he drives a blazer and understands the gas thing haha

Thanks, i LOVE my job... i also work for a private EMS company as a full time job. I understand good mileage and a V8 doesnt mix... i would like to get around 15 or so in the city. My Eddie Bauer is getting about 12.5 to 13. I have the computer to compute it... so im lazy, haha. I just changed out the old filter to K&N and seafoamed the car... surprisingly... no carbon was built up... the previous owner took care of the car. I havnt checked tire pressure yet, but thats next. Its got 75K miles on it.... any other cheap/free suggestions?
