Ok guys,
I have just has a new tranny in my explorer, I had some big problems with the other one. basicly the problem with the other one was when you let your foot off the accelerator it started to make a noise like a power saw! So I thought I would just replace the whole tranny.

Anyways so I get it back today (2 weeks later)
It was fine just driving it around town, the tranny felt different and did not shift as hard! I thought great its really working well.

anyways I got it out onto the open road and I was doing around 70mph and the check engine light comes on. So i stop and turn the X off and on again and its still there. So i carry on driving.
I stopped at a stop sign and then drove off again, and as soon as i put my foot on thr accelerator to drive off again the X starts doing about 4,000 revs! its just like its in the wrong gear or something....it moves but its in the wrong gear! anyways i took my foot off the accelerator for a second then put it back on. then the gear seamed to be there....very odd!

then I got it up to about 50 MPH but the revs were not moving off 3,000 at all its just sticking there for far too long! like 30 seconds before you feel a bump and the revs drop!

the place where I took it said they could not get the Speedo working cause it was a newer tranny and they would have to look into it!!! i was happy just to have my car back... but i wished i had made them fix it now...

Ok so i have some questions.

why do you think the check engine light came on,
Why do you think its never in the right gear?
...the oil is fine...

Oh yeah and to really make my day they broke the cruise control too!

- I love these guys! :-)

somone please help :-(

Have you noticed the O/D ON/OFF light flashing? That would denote a transmission trouble code. The check engine light could be anything.

Are you saying that your speedometer is not working? The sensor (called the VSS) that feeds your speedometer is also essential to making the transmission function orrectly. If it is disconnected, no wonder the tranny is not functioning correctly.

i think you need to go pay them another visit and make them fix it.
and yeah... the sensor needs more than a "well look into it"

Ok I just called these guys back and told them what I had found out...
he said the Speedo has no affect on the tranny at all. anways I know thats wrong because I have talked to ford :-)
oh well i guess its not going back to him ...

I take it that you are not 4WD

In 4X4's they put the VSS in the transfer case so that would just switch. Not sure when they started using the ABS sensor for the speed. No VSS signal would give you a check engine light.

ABS for speed? The VSS sends an AC voltage sine wave which is proportional to your speed to your PCM. Many functions of the transmissions including the speedometer is controlled by the VSS. The OBD-II will detect problems with the VSS and should throw a code. Get the codes read and see if it says fault VSS. My guess is that this is what is causing your problem.

I believe it was in '98 when the VSS was eliminated and the signal from the rear ABS sensor was used for the speed signal. That's why the '98+ requires a reprogramming of the computer to recalibrate the speedometer.

so what do yo do if you have a 97 explorer and a 98 tranny in it :-)
