I have a '92 EB 4-dr automatic with 170K miles. So far, nothing major has been replaced or rebuilt (if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?). Here is my question: would moving up to 30x9.50 tires put too much stress on the drivetrain and sap power from the engine, or would the change even be noticable? I'm also taking a 3,000 mile road trip in it this summer, I don't want the tranny to bust en route.

Hello again Trent,

As far as the mileage goes you will have to be the judge. If you or the previous owner have maintained it well with good quality products you should be in good shape. You may want to take it to a shop that you like and let them check it out. There are lots of rigs on the site with high mileage, look for the post "high mileage explorers" it is quite impressive.

You should be fine with the tires also. I went with the 31's on my 91EB 2wd and notice a minimal loss of power. I do lots of towing and am always at the boat ramp. The boat and trailer weigh about 2800-3000 lbs and I just tap the pedal to get it out of the water. I love watching the other trucks spin and smoke their way up the ramp while I darn near idle out. I am really impressed as if the tag on the door and the manual are correct I have the rear end with the 3.08 gears in it!

Note that I have the towing package on it and have not checked the tag on the pumpkin as I was told the towing package came with a differant rear end.

Anyway, enough ranting. Get the tires, get the coil spring spacers and shackles, give her a good quality tune up and service. (Bosch 4+ plugs, splitfire wires, synthetic fluids, cut the airbox and go have fun.)

Best regards.
hg
